The opening stages (and, in time, the entire game) feel familiar but deadlier - like Yu redesigned Spelunky specifically to punish those of us who’d grown complacent after eight years of speedruns, accustomed to shredding through them like Bill Murray skipping through the back half of Groundhog Day. Step on a dirt surface containing a pack of moles, and the sharp-toothed critters pop up for a bite, turning the familiar terrain into something reminiscent of “ the floor is lava,” with our hero leaping from one floating platform to another. Yellow lizards roll across the room like that big ball chasing Indy, and agitated moles cut through the ground like the graboids in Tremors. Except now, things are ever so different. Once again, you begin in a cave full of spiders, skeletons, bats, and golden idols that egg you on to set to set off their lethal traps. The new game from Derek Yu’s Mossmouth studio and Blitworks launches Sept. The answer, as you know by now, is Spelunky 2. But for better and worse, he’d created Spelunky, and most of us had one question for him even if we were too afraid to ask it out loud: “What’s next?” He became a husband, a father, and something of an elder statesman in the indie video game world, his work inspiring countless other games, books, and podcasts. He co-designed a card game, and has been gradually co-developing something akin to a video game mixtape. It’s not like Yu has been unproductive in the 12 years since Spelunky debuted. Yu published Spelunky the book in 2016, explaining how he made the “perfect game” in an autobiography-slash-design-document. Then came toys, T-shirts, and countless fawning reviews, including my own. Released alongside the rise of video game livestreaming, the HD edition found a fiercely dedicated fandom of video makers, who mined it for secrets. Yu and the team added multiplayer, along with a daily online leaderboard. Yu expanded on perfection in 2012 with the help of a small squad, creating Spelunky HD, a prettier revision and expansion of the original game it was released on Xbox 360, and eventually elsewhere. Some big-name designers and some little-name critics dubbed it a mini-masterpiece. A splash of math and creativity generated the game’s stages procedurally, which is a fancy way to say that no two runs through Spelunky will be exactly the same. It plants you in the boots of a diminutive Indiana Jones-type explorer who rappels through a series of cavernous stages cluttered with traps, baddies, and treacherous falls, using little more than bombs, ropes, and whatever the occasional shopkeeper will sell him. Its original release version uses a tweaked version of the RenderWare game engine used by GTA III, and similarly presents a huge cityscape, fully populated with buildings (from hotels to skyscrapers), vehicles (cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters, and planes) and people. GTA Vice City also appeared on the Japanese magazine Famitsu's readers' list of 100 all-time favorite videogames in 2006. As of April 2015, GTA Vice City is the fourth best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time in the United States. Later, Rockstar Vienna packaged the game with its predecessor, GTA III, and sold it as the Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack for Xbox, and finally it debuted for iOS and Android Decemas a celebration of its 10-year anniversary. It can even more be considered a worn leather the cracked leather, where, especially in the last decade, the grain was broken with mechanical stressing machines. The classic wrinkling is done in barrels through a particular tanning, but there are nowadays machines that fold the leather even when it is already dry and rubbing it giving the effect of a worn leather. This effect can be very invigorated with the prior application of special waxes and oils that accentuate the breaking effect, leading to substantial wrinkles and striations of interesting shades of color. Even the dry-milling can be considered a process to get an aged leather, because thanks to this process the fibers of the leather are broken and the skin takes on a rougher look compared to the primitive smooth effect. From this process we obtain a slightly ruffled grain, which gives the impression that the skin is not stretched well. Antique & Aged LeatherĪged (or Antique) leather is another particular form of distressed leather, and is mostly obtained by washing it in the washing machine, roughly the way it is done with jeans. The process to get aged or distressed leather is particularly effective on vegetable tanned hides. There are also machines that can give leather a "stained" and "antique" effect, but the latter technique, clearly more economical and industrial, is much less fascinating. The more properly distressed effect is often obtained with a hand-made equipment and aniline dyes which are applied with precise and artisanal movements and which give a particular aged effect maintaining a particularly appreciable depth of the skin. There are different ways of obtaining these particular "lived" aspects and obviously every type of processing gives rise to different effects. What is Distressed Leather and how is it produced? The vintage leather material recalls fashions of the past and proposes them in a modern key, combining traditional elements with those of modern trends. Vintage leather hides represent a particular type of aged leather, and are characterized by an old-fashioned, used look also called "old-style". These particular effects that could in the past characterize creations of lower quality, nowadays, in a world of rediscovery of the rustic taste, craftsmanship and traditions, are very appreciate and this type of leather material is very sought after also in the fashion industry. Distressed Leather Hides, as the name suggests, are skins that are wrinkled, aged, almost worn and often with an antique look. this is what it feels like when one reaches true enlightment! I’ve also swapped platters to an identical working drive to salvage the data. But with that, swapping R/W heads even on a multi platter drive is a snap. I’ve made tools to seperate the heads from the platter, which you can also buy but they’re usually ridiculously expensive. Fiddling with the arm on a drive that’s not spinning can do more damage than good. You really need to determine wether or not that a stuck head is the issue first, though. So be not afraid of killing something which is already quite dead (-: With 3.5″ drives it was really simple, I’m just a normal guy with a not so clean admins office in that time. I can’t say anything about modern drives, but my point is it is absolute worth trying. I did not count them but I think there where about 10 and I got all needed data from them. In one case I had to replace the pcb of the drive, I just swapped with one of the same type. So even in case of a head crash the data loss was minimal and unimportant. If there was a head crash I copied with dd until it failed and than dd’ed the rest by skipping some cylinders. Next I closed it, powered up again and copied the data. Than I carefully rotated the disks, most times I recognized a blocking at first, than free movement. Once opened I looked for obvious things like arms in the wrong position or circular scratch marks (due to head crash). I powered up the patient and listened, if it did not spin up, I opened it. I never had anything near clean room conditions, just removes all unnecessary stuff from my desk cleaned it, and locked the door to avoid someone coming in and moving dust around. Professional data recovery was, due to the costs, always out of question. Most times the drives contained commercially important but not critical data. I did this also several times back in the 5 1/4″ and 3.5″ times. Posted in classic hacks Tagged data recovery, hard drive Post navigation Of course, if you brick the device, you can always scavenge it for parts. Be sure to avoid dust entering the drive, and take care not to touch the platters themselves. Truly valuable data should be left to the professionals, but if you’re skint or simply unbothered, it doesn’t hurt to have a go yourself. It’s important to note that this is a highly risky procedure, and not guaranteed to succeed. Amazingly, the repair is successful, and data is able to be recovered! With this done, the drive is reassembled and powered up. Using a screwdriver, the platters are rotated in their usual direction while gentle pressure is applied to pull the head away, being sure to use a light touch to avoid ripping the heads off entirely. opens the drive carefully, and notes that the head is indeed stuck to the platter, instead of sitting in its home position. When tapping the drive fails to unstick the heads, the next step is disassembly.ĭespite the best advice from armchair commentators, this can be achieved at home without a clean room. Upon analysis, concludes that the drive is not spinning up, and suspects the heads may be stuck, causing the problem. The video begins with plugging the non-functional drive into an external caddy, and using a microphone to listen to the sounds it makes. However, this is Hackaday, not HireSomeoneADay, so ’s video on do-it-yourself hard drive repair is just what we like to see. When it comes to data recovery, there’s always those bleating from the sidelines that it’s a job that must be left to the professionals. Hard drive failures can be tough to bear, particularly for the average person who doesn’t back up. The seller is starts, runs, drives and stops as it should. The car came with optional power steering. An automatic transmission takes care of the gear work, likely a 2-speed unit. Fast forward to the engine compartment and the original 260 V-8 will be found there, having had the top-end rebuilt at some point with a new exhaust system added. We can’t be sure of the carpeting, but if it did require replacing, that would be one of the least expensive kits to have to buy. The original interior is darn nice, with the bucket seats, headliner and door panels apparently needing no attention. Since the car needs painting again anyway, go back to the original color. A photo from inside the trunk gives a hint to the original color as that patch of blue was not camouflaged. The front floor pans and toe boards were replaced at some point, but the rear floor pans and the metal below the rear seat are rusty and will require some work. The body looks pretty good, but it carries an older paint job, one where someone changed the color from Metallic Viking Blue to white (not a good idea in my opinion color changes usually devalue a car). While we don’t what the seller’s 1963½’s Falcon Spring has been up to the past 57 years, it’s largely done it well. Our appreciation goes to Classic Car History for some Falcon history! The Falcon Sprint was the basis for the 1965 Mustang, so you could say that without the Falcon, there would have been no Mustang. The Falcon platform was one of Ford’s most prolific, serving as the basis for many other cars over the years including the Mustang and Maverick at Ford, the Comet and Monarch at Mercury and the Versailles at Lincoln. For the half-year introduction, Ford built about 10,500 hardtops and 4,600 convertibles. The Sprint got a beefier suspension, bigger drum brakes and five-stud wheels. To further differentiate it, Ford used the 260 cubic inch “Challenger” V-8 engine that put out 164 hp from the mid-size Fairlane. Thus, the Falcon Sprint was born mid-year for 1963, a 2-door hardtop with bucket seats and console, wire wheel covers, tachometer and chrome doo-dads under the hood. But the field quickly got crowded and Ford brass wanted to inject some spirit into the little car. In the early 1960s, Ford had a winner with its new Falcon compact. It can be found in Seattle, Washington and here on eBay where the no reserve auction has reached $8,200. The only downside might be that it went through a color change at some point. This 1963½ Falcon Sprint is a nice, unrestored car with a rebuilt 260 V-8. That’s when Ford introduced the Falcon Sprint, which would be the first Falcon with a V-8 and the basis for the Mustang which would debut a year later.
